Yes, that's its actual scientific name. Down here they're more commonly known as snakebirds or water turkeys.
This one was drying its wings not far from where Kim and I were feeding ducks, turtles, the occasional wood stork, and the occasional seagull, ibis, and three dozen of their closest relatives.
This small park, tucked behind a fire station half a mile from my house, is one of my happy places. I've come here for years to eat, read, feed birds, and stamp out fire ants. It's where I proposed to Kim. She's taken to this place too, and she comes out here all the time to feed crackers to the ducks and bits of sausage to the wood storks. And Alana just chases the seagulls away shrieking like a banshee.
