Profitable repairs

When we got home from our camping trip we had a ton of bug-infested laundry to boil. Unfortunately, that evening is when the dryer decided to conk out, leaving us with a load of stewed clothing.

Taking the dryer apart, I sucked out a ton of lint, sand, and other detritus from the vents. Continuing the disassembly, I found that the drive belt was in tatters, but rattling around the bottom was a pile of coins.

Make that a lot of coins. Eleven years' worth of coins. So many coins that even after $20 for a new drive belt and $4 for a tube of lithium grease, I had a couple dollars left over.

All in all, $26.91 worth of coins fell out of my dryer. The repair was quite profitable, to say nothing of the vastly improved (and quieter) operation that came from cleaning it out.

The only major appliance in the house I haven't completely disassembled is the dishwasher. When it inevitably (and hopefully!) conks out, I'll happily toss it and replace it with one that doesn't suck.
